December 1, 2013 - Kyiv, Ukraine. More than 300,000 demonstrators chased away police to rally in the center of Ukraine's capital on Sunday, defying a government ban on protests on Independence Square, in the biggest show of anger over the president's refusal to sign an agreement with the European Union. Thousands of demonstrators tried to storm the nearby presidential administration building. In the early hours of the morning, on orders from Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, armed with truncheons and tear gas, the Russian-speaking police from Eastern Ukraine pummelled the peaceful demonstration, smashing heads and kicking people on the ground. Never in its 22 years as an independent country has Ukraine seen such violence. The standoff continues, with more demonstrators arriving. Let us pray for the safety of our people, relatives, friends, clergy, hierarchs and monastics in Ukraine. The violence can be viewed in the following short videos:
